SoK: Trusting Self-Sovereign Identity (Krul, Paik, Ruj, Kanhere 2024)

Summary

Systematically analyzes trust in Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) by breaking SSI systems into their components and examining the threats posed by the different actors involved. Derives three distinct trust models that capture the threats and mitigations found across SSI literature and implementations, and provides a catalogue of SSI components, design requirements for trust, and shortcomings of existing systems. Useful background for e-ID wallet threat modelling and for deciding where privacy-preserving techniques such as ZKPs are needed. Published in PoPETs 2024(3).
