Taxonomy for Privacy-Preserving Electronic Identities (Gasser, Humbert, Elghareeb 2025)

Summary

A Systematization of Knowledge (SoK) paper defining a taxonomy for digital identity systems with a focus on privacy-preserving properties. Specifies actors (issuer, holder, verifier), trust goals (anonymity, unlinkability, predicate proofs, holder binding), threat models, and cryptographic building blocks (signatures, ZKPs, secure hardware). Analyses relevant legal frameworks including the Swiss e-ID Act and EU Digital Identity (EUDI) regulation. Part 1 of a two-part analysis; Part 2 (forthcoming) adds evaluation criteria for comparing concrete e-ID systems.
