SoK: (Un)usable Privacy: the Lack of Overlap between Privacy-Aware Sensing and Usable Privacy Research (Iravantchi, Emami-Naeini, Sample 2025)¶
Last modified: 2026-10-27
Summary¶
Analyzes the research literature on privacy-aware sensing systems and on usable privacy, and shows that the two communities rarely overlap: technical privacy mechanisms are seldom evaluated with users, and usability studies rarely target the technical mechanisms. Argues for joint evaluation. A reminder for e-ID work that privacy guarantees must be understandable and usable by holders to be effective.
