New timeline for the introduction of the e-ID and the trust infrastructure (FOJ, 2026-06-30)

Last modified: 2026-10-28

Summary

Press release of the Swiss Federal Office of Justice of 30 June 2026. The e-ID, planned for the second half of 2026, is postponed without a new date: recent developments in AI require additional measures in the online issuance process, such as protection against malware on end-user devices and better deepfake detection. The date will be announced once this work is largely complete. Independently of the e-ID, the trust infrastructure (base and trust registries) is expected to become operational in the first half of 2027, with the E-ID Act at least partly in force, so that federal, cantonal and private issuers (e.g. the electronic driving licence) can use it.
