Swiss Federal Act on Electronic Identity and Other Electronic Credentials (E-ID Act, BGEID)

Last modified: 2026-10-23

Summary

Swiss federal law adopted by Parliament in December 2024 and accepted in the referendum of 28 September 2025, establishing the state-issued E-ID and a public trust infrastructure (base and trust registries, wallet) for other electronic credentials. It mandates privacy by design, data minimisation and decentralised storage of credentials in the holder's wallet — principles that motivate the e-ID project's research on ZKP-based selective disclosure and unlinkability.
